Project Awaz reaches new heights in providing opportunities to persons with hearing impairments

5th September 2016: Project Awaz, initiated by Shell Pakistan in collaboration with NOWPDP in April this year, to create employment & inclusion of persons with disabilities at their retail forecourts, concluded with a formal ceremony at Shell House to appreciate the efforts of all involved.

Project Awaz is aimed at enabling 11 Shell franchisees (retailers) in Karachi to hire persons with hearing impairments as retail site staff at their fuel stations by creating better employment opportunities for them. The main focus of this collaboration was to help foster an enabling environment for these new hires by engaging their peers in sensitizing trainings to build better work ethos amongst the site staff.

At the ceremony, Shell’s retailers were acknowledged for embracing the ownership of this project with such zeal and commitment and presented with a small token of appreciation while the new Service Champions were warmly welcomed and presented with their uniform by their respective retailers. Mr. Aslam Khoso, Global Service Champion winner with a hearing impairment, was also acknowledged and shared his inspiring journey of empowerment with the new hires.

Ms. Samar Naqvi, Senior Manager – Programs at NOWPDP remarked “Persons with disabilities have the same hopes and dreams as those without disabilities, the difference lying in opportunities which we have been able to provide today proudly. This is a cause for celebration, but also a time for reflection – inclusion of disabilities continues to be intermittently woven into the fabric of our society and we hope for its sustainable adoption.”

The ceremony concluded with well wishes for the continuity of Project Awaz and hopes for provision of gainful employment to many more persons with disabilities, as this milestone sets a benchmark for other organizations to follow in similar footsteps.
