Retrofitted Rickshaws are handed over to drivers with disabilities at The Rickshaw Project Launch Ceremony

Monday, 11 June 2018: NOWPDP re-launched “The Rickshaw Project” at the NOWPDP House.  Representives from Tri Pack films – the partner organization which donated the rickshaws were present along with President NOWPDP Amin Hashwani and Vice President NOWPDP Ronak Lakhani.

The launch commenced with an introduction from the Director, Omair Ahmad, who explained the idea of The Rickshaw Project by saying, “We wanted to do something that makes Persons with Disabilities a part of our day to day lives. Hence, we figured out that rickshaw is the most visible method of transportation in Karachi and around Pakistan.”

Omar Khan, from Tri Pack Films, appreciated the efforts being invested behind making TRP a reality. He saw TRP as a drop of change that could make the entire ocean. President, Amin Hashwani, then took the floor to talk about the changes that this project might bring with it. He encouraged the rickshaw drivers by saying that the success of this project is entirely dependent on their hardwork, and that the team hopes to convert these 5 rickshaws into 500. He also said that NOWPDP works on projects and solutions that are sustainable, can help in bringing about a change in the mindsets and projects those that are impactful.

The ceremony ended with all drivers with disabilities receiving their respective rickshaws.

Azeem – one of the drivers – was immensely grateful at this opportunity. He said, “I was made to leave my last job because of my disability. For a very long time I haven’t been earning and it has been hard, especially looking at the faces of my family after I would return hopeless. This is me starting over a new life with this opportunity and I want to show how having a disability doesn’t make you incapable of work.”

NOWPDP anticipates an even bigger fleet and the chance for more persons with disabilities to transform their lives.
